Hoist HD-3800 Inner and Outer Thigh Machine

The Hoist HD-3800 is a selectorized inner and outer thigh machine that trains hip adduction and abduction from a single seat. It suits commercial facilities and serious home gyms that want both hip movements handled by one station, with the start position and range set to the user before loading.

  • Exercises—Hip adduction and abduction
  • Resistance—Pin-selected weight stack
  • Builds offered—Standard HD or heavy HDG
  • Frame line—HOIST HD Dual Series
  • Entry—Walk-through, no climbing over arms
  • Placement—Bolted to the exercise floor
  • Suits best—Facilities and serious home gyms

Inner and Outer Thigh Work, Explained

This machine trains two opposite hip actions. Adduction draws the thighs toward the midline and loads the inner thigh. Abduction drives them apart and loads the outer hip and the muscles that stabilize the pelvis. Both run from the same seat, against the same stack.

Buyers usually arrive for one of two reasons. A facility wants both movements without surrendering a second position on the floor, or a lifter has found that squats and presses never quite reach lateral hip strength. Either way, this sits in the same family as the rest of our selectorized leg machines.

Do inner and outer thigh machines actually build strength? Yes, when the load is real. These are isolation movements, so the working weight is far below a leg press, but they load hip muscles through a range of compound lifts that rarely touch directly. Program them as accessory work rather than a replacement for squatting.

Why Both Legs Share One Load Path

Both legs work against a single load path, so this frame trains the movement rather than each side. Hoist's own parts list for the HD-3800 shows one cable and one resistance arm serving the left and right movement arms. Whatever your hips do here, they do together.

That is worth saying plainly, because of how the category is sold. Almost every abductor-adductor listing promises better balance, hip stability and knee alignment, which is the language of closing a side-to-side gap. A linked, bilateral frame cannot detect that gap. A stronger right hip will quietly take more of each rep, and the pin setting will never show it.

Choose the HD-3800 to load both hips heavily under control, not to correct a side that lags.

None of that makes it a weaker purchase. It makes it a strength tool rather than a diagnostic one. If an athlete needs genuine single-side work, that belongs on cables or bands, while a dedicated station such as the Hoist Inner Thigh RS-2406 answers a different question again.

Setting Up Each Exercise

Setup follows the same order every session, and the order matters more than the number on the stack.

  1. Set the back pad angle first. The adjustable-angle back pad accommodates varying flexibility and body sizes, and Hoist names flexibility alongside size, so the fit is about hip range rather than height alone.
  2. Swing the exercise arms to the start width. They can be adjusted from the seated position, so nobody has to dismount to change the setup.
  3. Rotate the thigh pads. They swivel for each exercise position, so one pad set covers both directions of travel.
  4. Set the range. Multiple range-of-motion adjustments cover both exercises, and Hoist prints separate range decals for the back pad and the knee pad.
  5. Pin the load and run the set.

Hoist publishes no position count for either range control, so a new user is setting by feel rather than by a number they can write down and repeat. Worth building into your induction if the machine will serve a mixed membership.

Who It Fits, and Who It Does Not

Honest fit beats a longer feature list. If you also want a dedicated abduction station beside this one, the Outer Thigh RS-2407 is the natural pairing.

Good fit

  • Facilities adding hip work to a leg circuit
  • Home gyms able to bolt into a solid floor
  • Lifters wanting loaded lateral hip training
  • Rooms serving a wide spread of body sizes

Look elsewhere if

  • You need to train one side independently
  • Your floor cannot take permanent anchors
  • You require a published user weight limit
  • Width beside the frame is already tight

That last point deserves a number. Hoist publishes one width figure for this machine and does not state whether it is measured with the arms closed or fully open, so plan the full 61.75" as clear space on the floor and do not assume the frame shrinks between sets.

Comparing Three Options on Site

Three stations on our floor answer the inner and outer thigh question in different ways, including the more affordable Body-Solid S2IOTX Series 2.

Delivery, Space, and Upkeep

Plan the room before the delivery date. This is a crated freight item that two people assemble on site, and Hoist requires it to be bolted down because tipping under load is a serious injury risk. That makes placement a decision you make once.

HOIST is not on our free shipping list, so freight is quoted rather than included, and we ship to all fifty states from Tennessee. Our shipping and returns terms run to a 30-day window on undamaged goods in original packaging, with a restocking fee and return freight paid by the buyer.

How much maintenance does a selectorized machine need? Less than most buyers expect, but not none. Hoist supplies separate home and commercial schedules covering upholstery, hardware, decals, guide rods, and cable inspection, and specifies no ammonia, acid, or petroleum-based cleaners on any surface. Cables and belts are listed as replaceable items rather than lifetime parts.

If the layout is still open, book a gym design session and we will work the footprint into your floor plan before you commit.

Common Buyer Questions

Does the full stack reach my legs?
No, and Hoist says so in its own manual. The published ratios are 50% on the outer thigh and 55% on the inner thigh, so the resistance at the pads is roughly half the plates you select. The manual prints the full plate-by-plate chart for the standard stack.

Can I increase the resistance later?
Partly. The optional 5 lb. weight upgrade adds a smaller increment to either build. The choice between the standard and heavy stack, however, is made when the machine is ordered, so size it for your strongest likely user rather than your current one.

What user weight is this machine rated for?
Hoist does not publish a user weight limit for the HD-3800 anywhere in its specification, manual or warranty documents. We would rather tell you that than repeat a figure from a third-party listing. Call us if a rated capacity is a procurement requirement and we will ask Hoist directly.

Is home coverage the same as club coverage?
No. The HD line sits in Hoist's commercial and light commercial warranty columns, which run ten years on the body and frame, five on structural moving parts, three on bearings, bushings, and pulleys, and one year on finish, cables, upholstery, and accessories. Hoist's residential column covers a different group of products entirely. Our guide on comparing equipment warranties explains why the tier is decided by the room, not the model.

Will this slim down my thighs?
Training a muscle does not remove fat from the area above it. Adduction and abduction work builds strength in the hip muscles and supports how you move, but body composition responds to overall training and nutrition. Any listing promising targeted fat loss from one machine is overselling it.

What if the machine is not right once it arrives?
The return window applies only to equipment that is undamaged and back in its original packaging, and custom configurations are treated as final sale. In practice the decision needs to be made before assembly, which is another reason to settle the build and the floor space in advance.
