Dominator Basketball Hoops That Won't Rust

Dominator basketball hoops are in-ground systems built on a 6061 T6 aluminum frame that won't rust. Hamilton Home Fitness stocks 54-, 60-, and 72-inch models from $1,999, with glass or shatterproof aluminum backboards. Each adjusts from 7 to 10 feet in seven cranks and assembles from four parts.

Why Dominator Builds in Aluminum

Aluminum doesn't rust. That single material choice explains most of what separates a Dominator basketball hoop from a steel system at a similar price.

Steel poles depend on paint or powder coat to hold back moisture. Once that layer chips—a stray rebound, a lawn trimmer, or road salt—corrosion starts underneath and spreads outward. Dominator uses 6061 T6 aluminum instead, the alloy specified in aircraft, automotive, and marine work, with stainless steel hardware at every fastener.

Are aluminum basketball hoops actually rust-proof? Aluminum contains no iron, so it cannot form rust. It develops a thin oxide layer that shields the metal underneath rather than flaking off it. Through a humid Tennessee summer or a salted northern winter, that difference decides whether your pole still looks right in year ten.

A powder-coated finish handles UV and rain on top of that. Black or brushed aluminum, and neither needs repainting.

The Dominator Lineup Compared

Five systems, three backboard widths, two backboard materials. Here is how they line up.

 Model BackboardOverhangFrom
54-InchTempered glass2.5 ft$1,999
60-Inch60 x 36 in. tempered glass3 ft$2,799
72-Inch72 x 42 in. tempered glass4 ft$2,899
72 in. Fixed HeightPerforated aluminum4 ft$2,999
Pro 72 in.Perforated aluminum4 ft$3,199

The 54-inch is the entry point and the only model priced identically in either color. Everything above it steps up to the backboard area and overhang together, and the overhang matters more than the width, for a reason most listings never explain.

Choosing Your Backboard Size

Measure backward from the backboard, not forward from the pole. That one habit prevents most sizing mistakes.

Overhang is the horizontal gap between the pole and the face of the backboard. The board reaches out over your court by that distance, which means the pole and its concrete footing sit exactly that far behind it. So the question isn't how wide your driveway is. It's how much clear ground sits behind the spot where you want the backboard.

  • 54-inch: allow 2.5 ft of clear ground behind the backboard line
  • 60-inch: allow 3 ft
  • 72-inch, fixed height, and Pro 72: allow 4 ft

Walk to where the board should hang. Step straight back by that figure. If you hit a fence, retaining wall, flowerbed, or the edge of the pavement, you need the next size down—or a different position on the property.

Is a 60-inch basketball hoop big enough for a driveway? For most homes, yes. You get a 60 x 36 in. tempered glass face and a 3-foot overhang, enough clearance to drive the lane without meeting the pole. Step up to 72 inches only if you want the regulation 72 x 42 in. board and have the setback for a 4-foot arm.

What size concrete pad do I need for a home basketball court? Dominator recommends at least 45 x 30 ft for a dedicated court, which fits a full three-point line with shooting room around it. A driveway install needs far less—a sound slab and a properly poured footing for the anchor.

Ready to size yours? Compare the 54-inch in-ground hoop against the 60-inch model and see which setback your space allows.

Glass or Aluminum Backboard

Choose glass for a rebound feel. Choose aluminum if a cracked board would be a real problem. Both sit on the same frame.

Tempered glass is what arenas use. The 72-inch Dominator basketball hoop carries a half-inch, 72 x 42 in. glass board, so a shot off the square banks the way it does in a gym. Anyone drilling bank shots will feel it on the first possession.

Perforated aluminum trades a little of that response for a board that cannot shatter. The Pro 72-inch with the shatterproof backboard suits exposed installs—high wind, flying debris, semi-public courts, anywhere a broken board would be costly or dangerous to replace—

There's also a fixed-height 72-inch system using the same aluminum board with no adjustment mechanism at all. Fewer moving parts and nothing to tamper with, which is why schools, parks, and playgrounds tend to specify it.

Installation and Ownership

Four parts, one footing, and the anchor does the hard work.

Every Dominator ships as a main post, overhang arm, backboard, and rim, plus backboard pads, anchor bolts, an anchor cover, a base pad, and an instruction manual. The anchor kit is set into concrete first. Once that cures, the four components go together above ground.

How hard is a Dominator basketball hoop to install? Assembly above the footing is manageable for two capable people with basic tools. The concrete work is the part worth hiring out if you haven't poured a footing before—depth, level, and cure time all matter, and a footing set wrong isn't something you correct later.

Upkeep afterward is close to nothing. Seven cranks move the rim from 7 to 10 feet, and the telescoping design lifts the board straight up, so the distance from rim to free-throw line never shifts as you adjust. Kids shoot at 7 feet in the afternoon; you play at regulation that evening on identical geometry.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which Dominator fits a two-car driveway?

Most two-car driveways take the 60-inch one comfortably. It needs 3 feet of clear ground behind the backboard line and gives you a full tempered glass face. Pick the 54-inch if the hoop has to sit close to a fence or wall.

How does the Pro 72 differ?

Backboard material is the only difference. The 72 Inch uses tempered glass for arena-style rebound; the Pro 72 uses perforated aluminum that can't shatter. Frame, overhang, and adjustment range are identical.

Can the hoop be lowered for young players?

Yes. Every adjustable Dominator model travels from 7 to 10 feet, and seven cranks cover the full range. The fixed-height 72-inch model does not adjust.

What comes in the box?

Each system includes the hoop assembly, rim, backboard, backboard pads, anchor bolts, anchor cover, base pad, and an instruction manual. The anchor kit is included, so nothing extra is needed for the footing beyond concrete.

Is the fixed-height model for schools?

It's built for exactly that. Removing the adjustment mechanism leaves nothing to tamper with and fewer parts to service—the reason playgrounds, parks, and public courts commonly choose it.

What warranty covers a Dominator hoop?

Dominator backs these systems with a limited lifetime warranty against manufacturer defects. Claims are handled by the manufacturer, and our team can point you to the right process.

Do you ship Dominator hoops nationwide?

Yes. We ship to all 50 states from our Tennessee base. Freight timelines vary by model and destination, so contact us before ordering if you're working to a deadline.
